ABOUT BAMBOO
Procurement of Bamboo:
The bamboo are procured from areas of Karwar and Dharwad area, the areas are named as Dhandali, Yellapur, forest region of Karwar and also from some forest areas of Dharwad and Hubli region.
Rates:
Usually the bamboo are procured by Merchants at Gulbarga Rates, the rates are changed frequently like Rs.28.50, 29.00, 28.00 and some time at Rs.30.00 per 10 to 15 feet bamboo.
For cutting purpose the merchants may take contract with some people and given them Rs.3/- to 5/- per bamboo cutting.
Licencing, Legal Problems, Government Restrictions:
Every merchant before doing this business must obtain certificate from Revenue Authority. This certificate is valid for one year.
The merchant take delivery of Bamboo for one year with that certificate and some time the merchants take contract of supplying the bamboo in trucks with some local merchants for selling them in the local market.
There must be some legal problems for this business and there are some rules and regulations. They are as follows:
The merchants should live in one place.
The government should supply the bamboo for only to association not for individuals.
The association must contain the minimum 5 member and maximum no limit.
For taking licence the association should be three years old.
The association must have one president and minimum three members.
Forest Departments:
The department of forest will create many problems when merchants are going to take permission for cutting the bamboo in some selected areas.
Now a days the forest department officials are so corrupt that they take high charges for sanctioning the permit (license).
Some times forest department may stock the lump sum bamboo and create heavy demand and then they market that stock for high rates.
Local Taxes / Sales Taxes:
There are no any local taxes or any sales taxes for this business. Only they (merchants) have to pay some amount for taking licence from forest department and the merchants are going to bear the loading and unloading charges.
Purchase of Bamboo:
The merchants purchase bamboo directly from Government of Karnataka. In Maharashtra, the farmers will grow bamboo and they sell the bamboo directly to the merchants without interference of the government.
The government sell bamboo in reasonable prices to the merchants. In Karnataka many people and their family mainly depends upon the bamboo and all they do some carpentry work. They purchase small and thin bamboo from merchants for Rs.10/- to 15/- and they sell the product for nearly Rs.20/- to 30/-. Some times the products are going to sell in low cost i.e., Rs.7/- to 12/- also.
So, that the people who depend upon these work will remain always poor.
Suggestions for bamboo merchantes :
There are certain suggestions, which I wish to give to the people of that community (Medar) they are:
