About Hindustan Aeronatics Ltd. Manufacturing (HAL)

Manufacturing Technologies:
The aerospace division is equipped with a wide range and large number of highly sophisticated computer numerical control machines.

5 axes high speed profilers and routers which can handle components as large as 2 meters x 9 meters and complex components / can be machined on the 5-axes machining centre.
Vertical Turn – milt – Borne centres of bed sizes ranging from 1 meter to 4 meters in diameter capable of handling components upto 5 meters in height.
Expertise is available for CNC programming of jobs involving 3-Axes and 5-Axes configuration.

Sheet Metal:
Rolling machines to roll aluminium alloy sheets / plates upto 25mm thickness and 5 meters in width.
Hydro forming of aluminium alloy sheets upto 5mm thickness and 2 meters diameter to spherical contour using water pressure of 12-14 bars. The sheet is held rigidly all around the periphery using hydraulic clamps upto pressure of around 650 bars.

Tooling:
CAD facility for design of large size assembling jigs.
Design and fabrication of large size assembly jigs.
Jigs and fixtures for structural assembly work.
Modular construction of assembly jigs.

Process Shop:
Chronic acid anodizing facility: capable of handling components of size upto 3.6m diameter and sheets upto 5 m length.
Chemical milling facility capable of handling sheets: of sizes upto 2.2M x 5M. The plant is capable of chemical milling pattern to reduce the weight of the component.
Vacuum impregnation facility: Capable of handling components of sizes upto 1.2 M diameter of size upto 2.2M x 1.2M.
Chromate & treatment facility: Capable of handing components of size up to 1.2 M diameter and rectangular components of size upto 2.2M x 1.2M.
Radium plating, stainless steel passivation and painting facilities.

Heat Treatment:
Solutionising furnace and aging furnace capable of handling parts as large as 4 meters in diameter and 15 meters in length.

CAD / CAM:
Unigraphics workstations.

WELDING FACILITIES:
Weld Stations: State of the art automatic TIG welding equipment for carrying out following welding operations.
Meridian welding.
Circumferential welding.
Rotary welding.
Longitudinal welding.

Pressure vessels ranging from half a meter to 4 meters in diameter and up to 15 meters in length can be welded.

All the processes are carried out under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity and in a totally dust free environment.

CRYO TANK:
The Cryogenic stage forms the upper most stage of Geo-stationary satellite launch vehicle having a propellant loading of12.5 tonnes and developing a thrust of 7.5 tonnes. The Cryo Tanks are welded structures of 2.8M diameter and 5.6M length. This tanks are used for storing liquid Hydrogen and liquid oxygen during flight.

HEAT SHIELD ASSEMBLY:
Uppermost, structure of launch vehicle to have the satellite, protect it from excessive acoustic loading and heat. This assembly is of 3.2M diameter and 8.5M height. It is a split assembly made into 2 halves along with piston and cylinder, which houses Pyro mechanism for separation.

CORE BASE SH ROOD
Bottom most structure of launch vehicle to with stand and carry 284 tonnes of load in case of GSLV and 400 tonnes is GSLV. This Structure is the most robust in construction made out of large diameter rings, slifferness rolled sheets & brackets. It is mounted on launch vehicle by means of 8 Nos. of strap-on attachment mounting blocks.

L-40 STAGE INTEGRATION & EQUIPPING
L-40 stage is liquid booster strap-on stage of GSLU. A total of 4 stages are required for one launch. Each state is 2.1M diameter and 19.68M length. It consist of 8 major sub assemblies and is fixed with plumbing lines, helium gas bottles functional modules & electrical cable harnessing inter connecting all the modules & Transducers. Final integration includes mounting of engine, Global leak checks functional checks, flow tests & cold – Gimballing test.
