(HKT), is a company promoted by the Bharat Mines and Minerals Limited, (BMM), a company belonging to the BMM group of Bellary, Karnataka, Singhi group well-known business group in the fields of mining Iron Ore production of Sponge Iron the group has a sales turn over exceeding Rs.400 cores and has its mining operations at Bellary, Hospet, Sandur belt and sponge Iron work at Danapur village, Hospet Taluk in Bellary area of Karnataka State.

The Major facilities in the proposed plant will be as follows:
a) 2 x 15 tones capacity Induction Furnace.

c) One rolling mill for producing TMT bars in the size range of 8-32mm with a capacity of 300 tonnes per day.
d) 25 mw Power Plant.

TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D):
Research and Development activities were carried out to develop various value added products such as Bright Bars (EN-32B), file Steel (140Cr3), Cold Headed Quality (SAE1015 & MSCHQ) and Forging Quality (SAE1045H). Based on the prevalent plant process conditions, operating parameters and technological requirements have been decided after trials and these have been manufactured at Steel Melting shop and rolled at the Rolling Mill. Products have been developed for ‘Niche’ markets to cater to the needs of reputed customers such as M/s. Ashok Leyland, Sundaram Fasteners, MM forgings, JK Files and Tools. Various new sizes such as 13mm, 16.3 mm and 21 mm etc., have been developed at the Rolling Mill.
TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTIN, ADAPTATION AND INNOVATION:
For the new projects which are being implemented as part of the expansion programme for capacity enhancement from the present level of 0.3 to 0.6 million tonnes per annum, various frontier technologies are being adapted, such as:
Zero effluent discharge non-recovery type coke oven with power generation facilities using the flue gas from the coke oven.
Pulverized Coal Injection System for the existing Blast Furnace as well as the new Blast Furnace.
DRY GAS CLEANING PLANT AT BLAST FURNACE:
Old descaler, which has been brought from Germany as part of total equipment for Bar and Rod Mill, has been reconditioned and commissioned to ensure product quality and reduction of rejections, especially slivers, which were occurring as major defects in spring steel flats, have been totally eliminated due to use of descaler.
Old off-line compactor for roils has been reconditioned and commissioned at the rolling mill to ensure proper compaction to meet customers’ requirements. Additional filters were commissioned in continuous Casting Machine (CCM) to enable better product quality and achieve longer sequences.
TMT TECHNOLOGY:
The steel of BMM TMT is made through a superior process: Sponge Iron from quality iron ore is melted in an Induction Furnace and cast into Billets by Concast machine.
The Billets are further heated in reheating furnace for better recrystallization to ensure uniformity of mechanical properties. Then each billet is discharged into the Rolling Mill Stand. After finishing the last stand, the bar enters a Water Quenching system where bar receives sudden and intensive cooling. This reduces the temperature and results in hardening of the surface layer into a martens tic structure. The core dissipates head and the centre becomes a fine grained Ferrite-Pearlite structure. The resultant bar has a combination of high strength and high ductility.
BMM TMT bars have all desired mechanical properties for better reinforcement and do not require the addition of costly of alloying elements.

INDUCTION FURNACE
The Induction Furnace is used to melt raw materials like Sponge iron, Industrial scrap and Pit Iron and hold the liquid steel. Steel for making TMT bars is fully killed in the furnace. The furnace maintains proper chemistry of steel which results in superior quality billets.
LADDLE PURGING : The molten steel is rid of slag inclusion particles by introducing argon gas into it. The chemistry and temperature is homogenized to ensure uniform composition throughout billets. This highly homogenized liquid steel is then tapped into the Continuous Casting Machine (CONCAST).
CONTINUOUS CASTING: Through a combination of primary and secondary solidification, the liquid steel is cast into billets. Superior quality of each billet is maintained by Primary and Secondary Automation and controlled heat transfer results in good quality billets rather than Ingots.

PLANT INFORMATION:
Ø BMM ISPAT LTD., Has installed a modern Rolling Mill plant with precision equipment to produce BMM TMT bars.
Ø A BMM TMT bar ensures a high elongation value of 16-22% rendering them safer when used in construction.
Ø The use of BMM TMT ensures reduction in steel consumption by a minimum of 15-25% with a definite saving in cost by 10-18%.

OTHER IMPORTANT PROPERTIES:
Corrosion Resistance
Controlled water quenching forms a tempered martens tic case all around the bar surface which prevents corrosion.
Weld Ability:
BMM TMT with less than 0.25% carbon renders good weld ability without needing any preheating or post heating of the welded joints. This also gives good fine grain structure in the heat-effected zone.
Earth Quake Resistance:
BMM TMT is resistant to high fatigue due to dynamic/seismic loads/vibrations due to its high ductility. This renders its use in earthquake prone zones safe.
Aging is Strain:
Due to advanced and careful manufacturing process control and stringent control over chemical composition BMM TMT develops no brittleness either in cold deformation on welding.
Bond Strength:
BMM TMT bonds best with concrete to form a unique reinforced structure which will show a very high monolithic effect and products very high load strength.
We already in The New Amendment To IS-13920-1993 OF 2.32002:
It is anticipated that in the coming days with aim of serving our customers better, we propose to produce FE-550, which will give more than 14.5% elongation.

CORROSION RESITANCE STUDIES Extensive corrosion resistant studies of this grade of steel have been conducted by the RDCIS/SAIL,
1. Corrosion rate was determined by electro – chemical test, Static Immersion test and salt spray test using 3.5% NaCl solution.
2. Electro Chemical tests have indicated that his grade of corrosion resistant bars have 2-3 times higher corrosion resistance compared to TMT bars without Copper and higher amount of Phosphorous.
