The company was established in the year 1963 as a single product company manufacturing high precision hermetically sealed panel meters for defence applications in Palakkad, Kerala, under the name of British Physical Laboratories.

In 1963, BPL founder and Group Chairman TPG Nambiar began manufacturing hermetically sealed precision panel meters in Palakkad, Kerala, under the name of British Physical Laboratories. Having worked in the UK and USA, when he came back to India armed with a vision of pioneering the manufacture of superior quality electronic products, he dreamed of making BPL a household name.

BPL Limited. The Group's principal activities are to manufacture and distribute consumer electronic products. The products include televisions, video tape recorder, audio systems, emergency lanterns, electrocardiographs and monitors. The Group also manufactures home appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, gas tables, soft energy and consumer telecom products. Its plants are located at Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. The Group operates only in India.

Sanyo Bpl Private Limited is a Joint Venture between SANYO Electric Co. Ltd., Japan and BPL Limited, started with the strategic intent to create one of India’s leading and most technologically advanced consumer electronics company. The JV came into existence in December 2005. The company has implemented a dual brand strategy, and has entered the market with both BPL and SANYO branded products. Whilst SANYO will cater to the high-end technology connoisseur, BPL brand will address the color TV segment, which has been BPL’s forte for years.

Earlier in Product portfolio of SANYO BPL there were Color TVs, Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Audio and Microwaves. But now this venture is handling only CTV. After 2006 other products have gone to BPL Techno Vision Pvt. Ltd.

HOME APPLIANCES BUSINESS GROUP

Among various pioneers, the HABG was the first to introduce the convenience of frost- free Refrigerators, fuzzy logic washing machines, microwave with grills suited Indian cooking compact and easy vacuum Cleaners and highly efficient cooking ranges of a large number of new products like non-CFC refrigerators, 4 direct cool refrigerators models, new washing machine technology called perfect Wash System and auto ignition Gas tables.

BPL Techno Vision Ltd. (BTVL)

Set up as a Joint Venture, with Sanyo holding 40% Equity. Was initially totally independent upon Sanyo for Technology and Product lines All Machinery, Components and Parts imported from Sanyo during the early years. But after 2006 BPL is handling the other appliances like Entertainment, home appliances, Home UPS, DVD, under BPL TECHNO VISION PRIVATE LIMITED and only CTV has gone to Sanyo-BPL.
