TATA STEEL LTD PROFILE

INTRODUCTION

Tata steel, formerly known as TISCO (Tata iron and steel company limited), is a steel company based in Mumbai, India.

Its main plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jarkhand, though with its recent acquisitions, the company has become a multinational with operation in various countries. The company is listed on BSE and NSE.

Tata steel’s products include hot and cold rolled coils and sheets, tubes, wire rods, construction bars, structural, forging quality steel, rings and bearings. In an attempt to ‘decommoditise’ steel, the company has reentry introduced brands, like Tata steelium (Indian’s first branded cold rolled steel), Tata Tiscon (re-rolled bars), Tata pipes, Tata bearings, Tata iron (Galvanised wire products) and Tata Agrico (hand tools and implements).

A part form the main steel division, Tata steel’s operations and grouped under strategic profit centers like tubes, growth shop (for its steel plant and material handling equipment), bearings, Ferro alloys and mineral, rings, agico and wires. Established in 1907, Tata steel is the world’s 6th largest steel company with an aggregated of annual crude steel production capacity of around 28 million tonnes having approximately 82,700 employees across the four continents, It was Asia’s first steel company and remains India’s largest integrated private sector steel manufacturer with investment in course, Nat steel and Tata steel (Thailand), Tata steel is the world’s second most geographically diversified steel producer, with operations in 24 countries and commercial presence in over 50 countries.

Recent performance

Year 2006-2007 has been a momentous year for state steel.

Tata steel had gross sales of Rs. 19763 crore at CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 21.1% and profit after tax of Rs. 4222 crore at a (AGR of 83.7% over last five years).

Most notable event during the previous year was the capacity steel producer with plants in united-kingdom and the Nether land. The acquisition of course has transformed Tata steel from a domestic steel producer to an international steel company with global scale.

Future plants

Installations of several new steel plants are under way. These plants have been planned to be setup in India as well as outside India. Following data show the future plans for Tata Steels.
