In 1888, less than four years after William Hesketh Lever launched Sunlight Soap in England, his newly-founded company, Lever Brothers, started exporting the revolutionary laundry soap to India.

By the time the company merged with the Netherlands-based Margarine Unie in 1930 to form Unilever, it had already carved a niche for itself in the Indian market. Coincidentally, Margarine Unie also had a strong presence in India, to which it exported Vanaspati (hydrogenated edible fat).

A year after the merger, Unilever set up the Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company, its first subsidiary in India and went on to strengthen its position by establishing two more subsidiaries, Lever Brothers India Limited and United Traders Limited, soon afterwards. The three companies, which marketed Soaps, Vanaspati and Personal Products, merged in 1956 to form Hindustan Lever, in which Unilever has a 51% stake.

Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) is India's largest fast moving consumer goods company, with leadership in Home and Personal Care Products, Foodss and Beverages and Specialty Chemicals. It is an ethos HLL shares with its parent company, Unilever, which holds 51% of the equity. A Fortune 500 transnational, Unilever sells over 1000 Foods and Home and Personal Care brands through 300 subsidiary companies in 88 countries world-wide with products on sale in a further 70. Business nature:

HINDUSTAN Lever has commissioned a detergent and a tea factory in Silvassa, taking its total number of new factories. HLL is putting up incremental tonnage and the capacity additions are a part of its long-term manufacturing strategies. The detergent factory at Silvassa was set up at a cost of Rs450 m in seven months. The plant has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons of bars and concentrate detergents, including brands such as Surf Excel, Rin and Vim. HLL already operates several factories in the Daman-Silvassa region to manufacture creams, lotions, other personal products, tea, detergents and speciality chemicals. The personal products factories manufacture brands such as Clinic, Sunsilk, Fair & Lovely and Lakme. The company has, so far, invested Rs2bn in factories in the region, with a total combined capacity of 300,000 tons. HLL has a total of around 90 factories across the country. HLL has identified 25 strategic factories for introducing Total Productive Maintenance, following its implementation at the Sumerpur unit, in a bid to cut supply chain costs. According to a senior official, savings are to the extent of     8-10 times of the investment in TPM.

Quality as the products of this company is highly qualitative and highly grade as there is no such quality but still to maintain its quality as to sustain in the market the company has set its own defects so that to maintain timely upgrading the quality of detergents.

The company has mention four kinds of defects which relates to the manufacturing process like ‘A’ defect, ‘B’ defect, ‘C’ defect and ‘D’ defect. ‘A’ and ‘B’ defect are those which may change the purchasing decision while ‘C’ and ‘D’ are not much visible.
